In response to the urgent need for sustainable densification in London, this rooftop development proposes a sensitive extension to an existing mansion block. New dwellings are introduced at roof level, arranged around the existing lightwells and wrapping the extended circulation cores to form a carefully composed fifth floor. Volumes are drawn apart to create a series of open ended courtyards between rooms, expanding the perception of space and allowing light and air to flow through the plan. A recessed entrance within the first volume offers a covered threshold, leading into a sequence of rooms arranged in enfilade. Each room opens onto a courtyard, creating a rhythm of alternating interior and exterior space and offering moments of connection to the sky above.
Balancing urban intensity with spatial generosity, the proposal demonstrates how thoughtful rooftop development can contribute meaningfully to London’s housing need — delivering high quality, light filled dwellings within the existing urban fabric.
