Rural Social Innovation Research Workshop
Brandeburg, Germany
As part of a broader collaboration with RurAction, The Leibniz Institute for Research on Space and Society (IRS), Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (LMU), a week-long research workshop was conducted in Uckermark, Germany. This rural region—marked by long-term population decline and economic challenges—served as the site for an in-depth social, economic, and spatial audit. The audit combined both qualitative and quantitative research methods to support a larger project exploring how social innovation emerges in rural areas, how it spreads between neighbouring communities, and what its long-term impacts might be.
This initiative is part of a transnational study spanning Germany, Portugal, and Ireland, developed in close collaboration with local communities and tailored to specific local conditions. The project contributes to the EU Horizon 2020 research programme, advancing innovation, knowledge exchange, and community-led planning across Europe.
Collaborators: Jamie-Scott Baxter (IRS), Felix Xylander-Swannell (TU Berlin), Colin O’Sullivan (LMU). Research Assistants: Kevin Adorni, Adam Cheltsov, Amadeo Martini, Margarita Zompa.
