Recalling the enclosed farmsteads of Irish courtyard houses, the existing home nestles at the edge of Cratloe Forest. A new arm extends from it, adopting an introverted courtyard typology that offers shelter from the elements while enclosing a south facing garden. Forming an L shaped plan, it creates a protective embrace around the outdoor space, reinforcing a sense of refuge and deepening the connection to the land. Framed on three sides by contrasting landscapes — the cultivated garden, open meadow and dense woodland - it engages in a quiet dialogue with its agricultural surroundings, assertive yet respectful, cultivating a strong relationship between interior and exterior. The existing wing of the house is built with thick masonry walls, while the new addition is finished with textured lime render externally and lime plaster internally. These natural, breathable materials ensure the structure remains both warm and rooted in vernacular tradition
